What Activities are available in Moodle?

Answer

"Activity" is a general name for any of the interactive tools in Moodle that are used for assignments, assessments, communications, etc. These are the tools students will use to engage with each other, with the instructor, and with the course information. Most Moodle activities can be used to generate a grade for students, and many will connect with the gradebook, transferring grades from the activity directly into a grade column.

Moodle "Activities" include:

  • Assignments - Enable teachers to grade and give comments on uploaded files and assignments created on and off line.
  • Chat - Allows participants to have a real-time synchronous discussion.
  • Feedback - For creating and conducting surveys to collect feedback.
  • Forum - Allows participants to have asynchronous discussions.
  • Glossary - Enables participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary; also can be used for collections of images, links, and other types of information beyond definitions.
  • Lesson - A tool that allows an instructor to add content and questions, and build an adaptive learning path that can be directed based on the answers given by the students.
  • (LTI) External tool - Allows participants to interact with LTI compliant learning resources and activities on other web sites such as those from a textbook publisher. (These must first be set up by an administrator on the site before being available in individual courses.)
  • Quiz - Allows the instructor to design and set up quizzes (tests, exams) which may be automatically marked, and feedback and/or correct answers shown.
  • Wiki - A collection of web pages that anyone in the class can add to or edit.
  • Workshop - Enables peer assessment of submitted work.
  • and others.

The various activity types are outlined here.
